There are three practical ways to measure reaction time without a laboratory: drop a ruler and catch it, run a red-light green-light drill with a friend, or use an online test. All three measure the same underlying thing - the delay between a signal appearing and your body moving - but they differ in what else they sneak into the number. This page gives you the exact procedure for each, the maths that turns a ruler catch into milliseconds, and the mistakes that quietly inflate scores.
Whichever method you pick, three rules apply. Warm up with two or three unscored practice attempts. Record at least five scored trials. And randomise the wait before the signal, because a predictable countdown measures anticipation rather than reaction.
This is the classic no-equipment method, and it is the only one of the three with zero electronic latency. You need a 30cm ruler and a partner.
The conversion is pure free-fall physics. The ruler starts at rest, so the distance it falls is d = ½gt², where g is 9.81 m/s². Rearranged for time, that gives t = √(2d / g). Convert your centimetres to metres, run the formula, multiply by 1000 for milliseconds - or just read the table.

Two quirks are worth knowing. Because time grows with the square root of distance, the scale is compressed at the top: the first 10cm buys you 143ms, but the last 10cm of a 50cm metre-rule only adds 33ms. And a standard 30cm ruler tops out at 247ms, which is below the adult average - so about half of adults will occasionally miss it entirely. Use a metre rule, or record misses as over 247ms rather than throwing them away.
A stoplight test - also called a red light green light or traffic light test - separates waiting from reacting, which the ruler drop cannot do. The point is that you must actively hold still until the green appears, so any attempt to jump the gun is visible and punishable.
The low-tech version: a partner holds up a red card, then swaps it for a green card at a random moment while you hold a stopwatch-style tap. That works, but human card-swapping adds its own delay. The cleaner version uses a screen that changes colour on its own timer, which is exactly what round one of our reaction time test does - it holds a red screen for a random 1.5 to 4 seconds, flips to green, and scores an early tap as a fault instead of a fast trial.
Score it like this: five valid green-light trials, any early tap discarded and repeated, and the average reported alongside the number of false starts you made. That false-start count is real information. Someone who averages 240ms with three false starts is not faster than someone who averages 265ms clean - they are gambling.
An online test is the most repeatable of the three because the timing is done by the device rather than by a person, and it can run a choice round or a moving-target round that no ruler can replicate. The trade-off is latency: display refresh, touchscreen sampling and wireless input each add a few milliseconds, so a screen-measured score usually reads 20-70ms slower than the pure biological delay.
That does not make it useless - it makes it a consistent yardstick. As long as you use the same device, the same browser and the same finger, the offset is constant, so your scores are comparable with each other over time. Close background tabs, plug the laptop in (some machines throttle on battery), and turn off notifications before you start.

If you only run one, run the online test for tracking and the ruler drop as a sanity check. They should agree within about 30ms once you account for the screen offset; if they disagree by 100ms, something in your setup is wrong.
