What Is Saju? Korea's Four Pillars of Destiny, Explained

Saju (사주) — literally "four pillars" — is Korea's traditional system for reading a person's nature and life flow from the exact moment they were born. Your birth year, month, day and hour each form one "pillar" of two Chinese characters, giving eight characters in total. That's why Koreans also call it Saju-Palja: "four pillars, eight characters."

It shares roots with Chinese BaZi and has been refined in Korea for over a thousand years. To this day, Koreans consult saju before marriages, career moves and New Year planning — and it's a staple of K-drama plots.

How a reading works

• The Day Master — the character of your birth day — represents you: one of ten types like the Tall Tree, the Sun, the Iron Axe or the Open Sea.
• The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — are counted across your eight characters. Their balance shows what energy you have in abundance and what you lack.
• The structure (Ten Gods) — how the other characters relate to your Day Master — reveals your life's pattern: creator, earner, leader, scholar, or independent fighter.

Is it astrology?

It rhymes with Western astrology (birth moment → personality map) but uses a completely different engine: no planets or constellations, just the traditional East Asian calendar of stems, branches and solar terms. And unlike a zodiac that splits everyone into 12 signs, saju has over half a million distinct pillar combinations, so readings feel personal.
